Six Passages
December 14, 2010
Passage-”That night the soup tasted of corpses.”
Response- After reading this it made me highly upset. Even though they just witnessed a poor man die they just went back to camp like nothing ever happened. If I would have watched someone die right before my very eyes I wouldn’t be able to eat nor sleep, but I’m guessing that they are so used to seeing this that it starts to feel normal to them after a while.
Passage-”He had the face of a sad angel.”
Response- My heart was pounding with anger. MAD ! How could they kill an innocent, basically baby boy without a problem. How could you kill a little boy without any guilt or remorse. As i sit shaking my head as I’m reading i nearly cry.
Passage-”It was over but i didn’t realize it for i had fainted.”
Response- After nearly getting beaten to death Elie faints. Reading this just made me nothing but angry. I felt as if i was there and just wanted to run to help him. It made me break down a little bit because now i know how thankful i am to have not lived during the holocaust.
Passage-”What are you my god.”
Response- Saying this made me believe that there was no god. Only because i know god wouldn’t let someone go through so much pain and nearly die. I feel as though i would have been saying the same thing if i was put in the same exact position.
Passage-”Faster you swine, you filthy sons of Bit****”
Response- This made me very angry because if i caught anyone talking to me like that i would have a total fit and would not do anything for that person ever.
Passage-”Don’t think, don’t stop. Run.”
Response- This made me think that Elie was a very determined boy. This made me feel that he deserved to be set free because of him being so dedicated to staying on task and doing what was told of him.
Reading Guide Questions Section 3 and 4
December 13, 2010
#1 I think the Germans wanted to prove a point to all of the other prisoners and tell them that they were not to be played with. I think that was to show that this could happen to anyone in the camp.
#2 In the begging of the story Elie and his father were very close. When they arrived at the concentration camp it was as if being alive didn’t matter to either of them so as time moved on they moved Further apart.
#3 This is a significant act because this showed us that his father was worried about his safety. When he gave this to him I wasn’t sure what this was for but I’m pretty sure it was so Elie could protect his self.
#4 While Elie was at Auschwitz his faith had dropped to an all time low. He felt as if he nor his father was going to make it out of there alive, And sadly his father didn’t. Elie didn’t want to suffer anymore and just to end everything.
#5 A German workman throws smalls crumbs of bread in the middle of the wagon which causes a lot of starving men to run after it. This may suggest that he likes to see men fighting over hat really is nothing to him. This suggest that the prisoners are very hungry at this point in time and probably haven’t eaten in days.
#6 Near the begging of the story a guard strikes his father and Elie didn’t do anything. After that his father didn’t really talk to him but as time moved on they talked again.
#7 On January 28, 1945 Elie was released from the concentration camp and was let free. Elie’s emotional state was ecstatic because he never new that they were going let him out he thought he was going to die there.
#8 I think this means that the man that the concentration camp has turned him into has now stuck to him forever and will always be with him from that day o.
#9 At the end of the story he wanted to keep you guessing as to what the last sentence of the story has meant. But unfortunately he was very unsuccessful.
#10 The meaning of the title was to say how endless the night felt the firs night of concentration camp, And i wouldn’t change the name of the story.
Reading Guide Questions Section 1 and 2

#1 Elie describes himself as 18 year old farmer. He also descibes himself as being loyal to his family and a strong young man.
#2 Moshe the beadle is the guy in the begging who tried to like help all Jews. He was a friend of the family.
#3 The town thought of him as a nice man i guess and some of them actually enjoyed his telling of many stories.
#4 I think he wanted us to see how the town treated certain people or how he felt about him. Elie liked this man and felt as though his stories were and inspiration.
#5 Well, the first day that they came they were kicking people out of there houses, taking children away from there parents, splitting up everyones family. Eventually everyone was either sent to a concentration camp or killed.
#6 Elie family was separated like he was with his father and his little sister and his mother was together.
#7 The reason why i think the germans take away there clothing is because they feel as though they don’t deserve to have anything and also so they can see how healthy they are and no who will be able to withstand there duties. I don’t really understand why they cut there hair. They tattooed a number on them so they could identify each one.
#8 For a life to be turned into one long night its like it feel as if you are being trapped into one day and it doesn’t feel as if the day is ever going to end.
#9 This novel was very interesting. I felt as if i was actually in that present time during the holocaust. The author used very vivid details and made sure not to leave anything out. Every person in this story had a very specific role and was important at all times. Even though this was a sad book it also educated you on to what was happening during that time. So as well as it was sad it was also an informational piece.

I felt revolt rise up in me
The eternal, lord of the universe
All-Powerful, Terrible, and Silent
An endless road
Cold with despite, Breathless, throats parched
Death, Fatigue, Hunger,
Not a living soul,

Lap # 3 Part 2
November 17, 2010
I feel as though the Jewish were treated with the up most disrespect. For example they were FORCED to move out of the cozy homes to go live in an over crowded small ghetto. I didn’t like the fact that crippled people were punished even though they were unable to walk. As of today I would hate to have lived during such a terrible time. I think it is so sad to see a fiend of yours get murdered or hurt just because if there religion.
Primarily Szpilman identifies himself as a musician. Although he has no choice but to be viewed as a Jew, to him he is a musician. Watching this movie you could see the dedication in this mans eyes, no matter what was going on around his music and his family was his heart.
Lap # 3 Part 1

So far, I have learned tat living during the holocaust time was very difficult. Many people were brutally murdered and hurt just because they were Jewish. Children couldn’t eat and were suffering for dear life. If you were disabled and were unable to do what you were ordered you were still punished as if you weren’t. The thing I found most compelling was that the Germans got away with doing all of this to many people but were arrested for doing anything, as if it was the right thing to do. Everyone that was Jewish never did anything to hurt or bother the Germans so why were they punished for every little thing that they did ?
The choice that I chose for my lap three major project was number 5, which is researching a modern genocide and gather important facts to prepare for a 3-5 minute presentation. To prepare for this presentation I will first choose a modern genocide. Then, research that topic, gather as much information as I can, then summarize it for a short presentation.
